Malaysian Ambassador Names Dagestan Among Regions That Left Best Impression on Him

In a recent interview with RIA Novosti, Malaysian Ambassador Cheong Loon Lai shared his impressions of his travels across Russia, saying, “Of all the places I’ve had the chance to see, of course, it was interesting to visit Dagestan—to be in the Caucasus, where the majority of the population are Muslims.” His itinerary also included visits to Kazan, Arkhangelsk, the Russian Arctic and Vladivostok.

Ambassador Lai traveled to Dagestan in April 2024 as part of a diplomatic delegation comprising representatives from nine Islamic countries. During his visit, he met with Head of the Republic Sergei Melikov and both sides identified the agro-industrial sector—particularly the production and supply of halal-certified agricultural products—as a key area for cooperation between Malaysia, other Islamic nations and the North Caucasus region.

The delegation toured local enterprises, including the “Derbent AGROS” greenhouse complex in Derbent District and observed open-field vegetable farming and intensive horticulture practices. Cheong Loon Lai reaffirmed Malaysia’s ongoing interest in deepening collaboration with Dagestan in the agro-industrial sphere.
