MAKHACHKALA, September 29 – RIA "Dagestan". A novel diagnostic technology for quantifying the degree of angulation in a gastric cascade has been developed and patented by researchers at Dagestan State Medical University (DSMU). Operating within the domains of radiodiagnostics and gastroenterology, the invention seeks to refine the assessment of gastric anatomical anomalies. The study was conducted by faculty members Efendi Ismailov, Magomed Imanaliev and Dilyara Rimikhanova, with the patent assigned to DSMU under the Russian Public Health Ministry.
The "cascade stomach" is defined as an anatomical variant characterized by a transverse fold within the organ. Clinically, this configuration may precipitate delayed gastric emptying, manifesting as heaviness, heartburn, and eructation, thereby exacerbating gastroesophageal reflux disease. Conventional radiological evaluations have historically graded the deformity based on the spatial location of the fold, failing to account for the degree of angular flexion.
The methodology proposed introduces a supplementary diagnostic parameter: the quantification of the flexion angle via targeted contrast-enhanced fluoroscopy. Consequently, the authors propose a binary classification system for cascade deformities: Type I (flexion angle < 90°) and Type II (flexion angle > 90°).
This framework augments standard radiological interpretation with an objective quantitative index. The authors highlight the clinical necessity of identifying Type II patients, who are predisposed to prolonged gastric retention. Additionally, the study delineates a conservative management protocol for this specific cohort. The implementation of this method is expected to facilitate precise morphological characterization of gastric deformities and guide evidence-based clinical decision-making.
