A joint expedition of scholars is currently underway in Dagestan, involving experts fr om the Institute of Biology of the Southern Seas, in collaboration with colleagues from Grozny State Petroleum Technological University, the Academy of Sciences of Chechen Republic and the Institute of Geology at the Russian Academy of Sciences. The objective of this expedition is to investigate the geoenvironmental conditions of mountainous river basins in the northeastern Caucasus.

This expedition, coordinated by the InBUM Research Center, focuses on the study of specific areas along the Shuraozen and Samur rivers in Dagestan. The Federal Institute of Applied Geology is represented in this comprehensive expedition by two scholars from the laboratory engaged in developing methodologies for assessing geoenvironmental impacts in mountainous river systems. These experts, Alexandra Nikiforova and Polina Drygval, play a crucial role in analyzing the intricate dynamics of these ecosystems.

Particular attention is paid to regions wh ere human activities significantly impact the natural environment, providing valuable insights into the delicate balance between human presence and ecological sustainability.

The expedition, conducted in a picturesque region of Dagestan characterized by its lush vegetation and close proximity to wildlife, presents a unique opportunity to delve into the intricate interplay of forces shaping ecosystems. The active engagement with local inhabitants, who exhibit a genuine interest in the scientific endeavor, not only facilitates the dissemination of ecological knowledge among the local population but also fosters a sense of responsibility towards the environment, the expedition member Alexandra Nikiforova says.

The expedition is conducted within the framework of a large-scale project titled "Dynamics of the Geoecological State of Mountain River Basins in the North-Eastern Caucasus, Azerbaijan, and Iran in Light of Climate Change and Increasing Anthropogenic Pressure", which is currently implemented with financial support from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation.
