Decrease in level of Caspian Sea may affect volume of fish caught

The receding waters of the Caspian Sea are projected to have a negative impact on fishing yields, as experts say.

Data from the Fisheries Committee of the Republic of Dagestan indicates that the sea level decline observed in 2023 directly correlated with a reduction in the volume of fish caught. This trend is further compounded by fishermen being compelled to extend their operations farther into the sea, particularly in the northern region of the republic.

Despite these challenges, scientific estimations suggest that the Republic of Dagestan has the potential to harvest up to 100,000 tons of fish. However, actual catches in 2024 amounted to only 30,000 tons, with Caspian sprat constituting 22.5 thousand tons of this total.
