Derbent, October 18, 2020. A monument to the poet and thinker of the medieval East Nizami Ganjavi has been erected today on the viewing place of the Naryn-Kala citadel in Derbent, the press service of the city administration reports.
Mayor’s office of the city of Derbent selected the best project of the monument through a competitive process. The author of the project selected is a sculptor from Makhachkala, Magomed-Ali Aliyev. The monument was created according to a sketch from granite and bronze, the poet is depicted sitting at work - with paper and a pen in his hands.
The park, named after the classic of Persian poetry, is the largest in the city and is currently being renovated. Upon completion of the work, the monument will be removed from the fortress and installed in the park, the source says.
“We thought for a long time how to secure the monument to Nizami Ganjavi, which was regularly vandalized. The previous monument was made of cement, which is a fragile material. The new monument is made of bronze and granite. From now on, the monument will not be subject to vandalism by hooligans. I also ordered to install LED lighting on the monument and the tree. It will create a whole fabulous atmosphere that every resident of the city and its guests will want to see” the city mayor Khizri Abakarov told at the official presentation ceremony.
