MSU students create map of natural and cultural sites in Dagestan

The students of the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University conducted a winter expedition to Dagestan to create maps containing info on the cultural, historical and natural heritage of the region.

The expedition participants visited various districts and settlements of Dagestan, including Kubachi, Hunzakh, Khasavyurt, Kizlyar, Derbent and Makhachkala. From January 26 to February 6, 2024, 17 students will study significant natural and cultural sites, visit museums and enterprises typical of the region's economy.

After the fieldwork, the students will sel ect reliable information and present it in an accessible form. The project will result in a series of maps of Dagestan, including maps on its nationalities in different periods, military-historical, artistic and musical heritage, sports, cuisine and folk crafts, as well as cult, museum and natural sites.

One of the aims of the project is to develop tourism in the region and raise awareness of its heritage. The project also aims to balance the flow of tourists and distribute them evenly across all the sites of interest in Dagestan.

Further work on data research and verification will be carried out in Moscow with the involvement of experts fr om the Geography Department of Dagestan State University, as well as staff from Dagestan museums and relevant organizations.
