As to the Head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, three waste sorting complexes will have been constructed in the republic by 2025. The regional governor made this announcement at a meeting with Denis Butsaev, CEO of the Russian Ecological Operator stressing strategic importunacy of the ongoing project for the republic.
Melikov noted that in 2019, Dagestan had only two landfills, which could only accommodate 400 tons of waste out of one million tons generated annually. This led to the uncontrolled storage of waste in different places.
The project was made possible thanks to support from the Russian government, methodological assistance from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and technical assistance from the Russian Environmental Operator. The complexes will be constructed in the southern, central, and northern regions of the republic. Construction work is underway to help Dagestan get rid of the issue of unauthorized landfill sites as soon as possible.
