Dagestan to host international Forum on sustainable mountain area development with focus on tourism and economy

The Chairman of the Government of Dagestan Abdulmuslim Abdulmuslimov met with Dmitry Kobitsky, Secretary General of the Interparliamentary Assembly of the CIS Member States at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) to discuss preparations for the upcoming Second CIS International Forum on Sustainable Development of Mountainous Territories. Scheduled for October 1-3 in Dagestan, the forum will focus on the crucial role municipalities play in enacting environmentally conscious policies vital for sustainable development in mountainous regions. Besides, it aims to develop mechanisms enabling adaptation to evolving climatic and socio-economic conditions at the local level.

This significant event is jointly organized by the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, the Federation Council, the Government of Dagestan, the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation. The Forum will serve as a platform for leading scientists, experts, government representatives from CIS countries, and international organizations to convene and exchange knowledge.

As to Dmitry Kobitsky, the Forum participants will concentrate on strategies for fostering tourism development in mountainous regions. Abdulmuslimov emphasized Dagestan's unique position as the only subject of the Russian Federation with a comprehensive state program dedicated to the sustainable development of mountainous territories. The top official underscored the republic's willingness to share its expertise and embrace best practices from other regions.

Particular attention will be directed towards promoting mountain tourism, enhancing road infrastructure and communication networks. Additionally, Abdulmuslimov announced preliminary agreements for gasification in two major mountainous areas in Dagestan.
Ilyas Umakhanov, First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture, underscored that the Forum will serve as a valuable platform for sharing experiences and examining best practices concerning the development of mountainous territories.

An organizing committee has been established to oversee preparations, with both business and cultural programs meticulously designed. Discussions will encompass a wide range of crucial topics, including agricultural development, water resource management, infrastructure enhancement, energy supply, environmental protection measures, and the promotion of agrotourism. The Forum's deliberations aim to culminate in concrete proposals for refining legislation aimed at fostering the development and safeguarding mountainous territories.
