The Kargalinsky hydrosystem has been commissioned in Dagestan following a RUB 1.3 billion reconstruction project. The reconstruction of this facility, which involved the construction of a fish bypass canal, was implemented as part of a state program aimed at optimizing the use of agricultural land for development of reclamation complex in the Russian Federation.
Within the framework of this project, the dam and the sluice gate were renovated. Besides, the structures for fish protection and temporary holding of fish were erected. The 16.7-kilometer-long delta channel was deepened, and hydromechanical equipment replaced. The capacity of the channel is 14 cubic meters per second, allowing for the passage of fish around the dam on the Terek River.
These measures will create favourable conditions for the production of agricultural products oriented towards export, including rice.
The reconstruction of the Kargalinsky reclamation system is a momentous event for the local agricultural producers, as it encompasses 75% of the entire rice network in the republic. The affected districts are Kizlyarsky and Tarumovsky. The project also integrates an additional 14,000 hectares of land into the reclamation network.
This reconstruction initiative will prevent the loss of over 114,000 hectare reclaimed land for agricultural purposes. The Kargalinsky hydrosystem is situated along the Terek River and spans Kizlyar municipal district in Dagestan and Shelkovskiy district in Chechnya, providing water supply to multiple irrigation systems.
