The presence of the Asian tiger mosquito, a potentially disease-carrying insect species previously unobserved in the region, has been documented for the first time in Dagestan, according to reports fr om Russian media citing entomological research.
This mosquito species presents a significant health risk as it is known to transmit tropical diseases prevalent in Southeast Asia, including Zika virus, Dengue fever, and Chikungunya.  To gain insight into the factors contributing to the emergence of this new species and its potential implications for public health, experts in ecology and biology have been consulted.

Adam Kalimatov, Chair of the Central Council of the All-Russian Public Movement Environmental Volunteers, has characterized the situation as "alarming," emphasizing the urgency of addressing this discovery.

This Southeast Asian insect species, known for transmitting severe infectious diseases, poses a significant threat to Russia due to the lack of population immunity against these pathogens. The expanding geographic range of this species is directly attributable to climate change and environmental degradation. Unless we prioritize environmental protection measures such as halting deforestation, wetland drainage, and desertification, the emergence of novel and potentially harmful species will become increasingly frequent.

Current events underscore the consequences of neglecting environmental conservation, a concern previously raised by experts. By disrupting delicate ecological balances, we inadvertently invite new animal and insect species into regions wh ere they were previously absent. This issue transcends mere environmentalism; it constitutes a matter of national security, public health, and the long-term well-being of Russian citizens.

Urgent action is required to alter our approach towards the environment, as the repercussions of inaction could be permanent and detrimental. This sentiment is echoed by Professor Sadaget Gadzhieva, a Biology expert at R. Gamzatov State Pedagogical University. She highlights the alarming presence of the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) in Dagestan.

This species, traditionally found in Southeast Asia's tropics, has shown an extraordinary capacity for dispersal in recent decades. This phenomenon is linked to both global climate change and its high adaptability. Professor Gadzhieva emphasizes the potential danger posed by Aedes albopictus as a carrier of serious diseases such as Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika.

While no cases of these infections have been reported in Dagestan yet, the mere presence of this vector necessitates preventative measures. The ongoing regional warming further exacerbates the situation by creating favorable conditions for the mosquito's continued spread.

This research indicates that the southern regions of Dagestan face a heightened risk of mosquito-borne illness. To mitigate this risk, the following precautions are recommended:

* Protective Clothing: Individuals should wear clothing that covers the majority of their body surface, particularly during dawn and dusk when mosquito activity is most prevalent.

* Repellents:  Natural repellents derived from essential oils such as citronella, cloves, lemon, eucalyptus, and lavender, or synthetic repellents are advised for both indoor and personal use.

* Mosquito Nets: The installation of mosquito nets in homes and businesses is crucial for preventing mosquito bites while sleeping.

* Habitat Elimination: Stagnant water sources, open containers holding water, and discarded tires should be eliminated to prevent mosquitoes from breeding.

* Allergic Reactions: Heightened vigilance regarding potential allergic reactions following mosquito bites is essential, particularly for children and individuals with compromised immune systems.

R. Gamzatov State Pedagogical University, in collaboration with local sanitary authorities, maintains continuous surveillance of the situation and is prepared to react swiftly to any developments.  As stated by Sadaget Hajiyeva, a Doctor of Biological Sciences, while urging citizens to remain vigilant, she emphasizes that adherence to preventive measures can effectively minimize potential risks.

The recent sighting of a tiger mosquito on the Black Sea coast and in Krasnodar Territory precedes its emergence in Dagestan, highlighting the increasingly evident impact of climate and ecological shifts within the country. Experts underscore the necessity of an integrated approach to environmental protection and public education regarding environmental issues for safeguarding human health amidst these changing climatic conditions.
