Over 140 hectares of new orchards will be planted this year in three mountainous districts of the republic - Rutul, Botlikh and Gumbetovsky this year. The government actively supports agricultural producers, providing up to 95% reimbursement for the costs associated with establishing intensive orchards and acquiring small-scale machinery. These measures aim to bolster agricultural production in mountainous areas where the climate is conducive to fruit cultivation.
The region continues to showcase innovative projects. The largest kiwi orchard in Russia spanning an impressive 20 hectares, has been planted in the village of Avadan, Derbentski district. Agronomists meticulously tailored the conditions for this exotic plant, incorporating optimal irrigation and lighting systems to ensure its successful cultivation.
The neighboring region harvested 85,000 tons of apples this year, an increase of 14 percent compared to the previous year. This crop accounts for 90 per cent of the region's total fruit production.
The area of orchards is increasing by 400-500 hectares per year. In 2024, the industry will receive RUB 412 million in state subsidies, which will be used to compensate farmers, protect them from hail and maintain the orchards.
