The process of shoaling of the Caspian Sea and siltation of the entrance channel to the commercial seaport of Makhachkala lead to idle vessels and loss of fishing time and money. This opinion has been voiced by representatives of the industry at the meeting on organization of sprat fishing in the Caspian Sea recently chaired held by the head of Rosrybolovstvo Ilya Shestakov.

As to Rosrybolovstvo (the federal executive body responsible for control in fisheries and conservation of marine biological resources in Russia’s inland waters), to improve the efficiency of sprat fishing in the Caspian Sea, amendments to the Fishing Rules on the timing and areas of extraction are needed. It is also planned to solve the problem of siltation of the entrance channel to the port of Makhachkala for uninterrupted operation of the fleet.

The federal center promised to help Dagestan in reviving ship repair plant, as well as to support a project to modernize Makhachkala fishing port.
