According to the Fisheries Committee of the Republic of Dagestan, the volume of aquatic biological resources harvest for the first three quarters of 2025 amounted to 24.6 thousand tons, which is 4% higher than the 2024 level. Of this total, 20.8 thousand tons consist of Caspian sprat. The harvest of this species saw a 12.4% increase compared to the previous year.
However, as noted by the Committee's Head, Khadizhat Shamkhalova, coastal fisheries are being adversely affected by the significant drop in the level of the Caspian Sea. This complicates fishermen's access to the sea, particularly in the northern part of the republic.
The Committee has received requests from multiple enterprises in Kizlyar and Tarumovka municipal districts to relocate their unloading and mooring sites, a direct consequence of the dropping sea level.
Fishing in the republic involves 88 economic entities. A key segment of this industry is sprat fishing, which is carried out by about 32 organizations. This group is split between 16 organizations that use a fleet of 22 commercial vessels and others that engage in coastal fishing.
Notably, the Head of the Committee stated that for the 2024-2025 season, commercial sprat fishing is being pursued not only by local shipowners but also by entrepreneurs from other parts of Russia.
