The experiment was carried out in two small villages that regularly experience power outages and voltage fluctuations in their electricity supply. The villages were temporarily disconnected from the internet for a short period, after which the load on their power grids decreased significantly.

The monitoring results were surprising, as they showed a reduction of 3.2 megawatts in power consumption, enough to power up to 1,500 households. This power is likely being used for cryptocurrency mining operations. Special raids, conducted jointly with the local law enforcement agencies, will continue in order to identify and address these "black" mining operations.

Earlier, media outlets reported that in 2024, the most significant damages resulting from illegal connections of crypto miners to power grids were recorded in the Caucasus, exceeding RUB 600 million. Overall, the losses incurred to the Russian Grids by illegal crypto mining activities in 2024 are estimated at RUB 1.3 billion.
