Khadijat Shamkhalova, the head of the Fisheries Committee of the Republic of Dagestan, reported that every year more fish is caught and cultivated in Dagestan. Last year, the top official says, 37 thousand tons of fish were caught and about 6 thousand tons were farmed.

At the same time, Shamkhalova pointed out the region’s lagging in processing capacity. "Almost all the fish caught goes to other regions for processing, and then in the form of canned food, is sold at our inner market. However, a number of investors consider possibility of launching projects for the processing of fish products. Thanks to the government’s support, several mini-workshops have been opened in the republic" - Shamkhalova said.
