A project is underway in Gumbetovsky municipal district of Dagestan to restore the indigenous "Khop-khalat" grape variety, a significant component of the region's agricultural heritage. The "Khop-khalat" variety, distinguished by its exceptionally long bunches (up to 65 cm) and large leaves, is a late-ripening cultivar of the Eastern Vitis vinifera proles orientalis. Its last known cultivation is in the village of Nizhneye Inkho.
Under this initiative, 20 hectares of land have been designated for cultivation. The deputy Head of the regional Viticulture Committee Akhmed Akhmedov leads the operational efforts to explore restoration methods. As to Magomed Abdulhalimov, the Head of the District Agriculture Department, the revival of 'Khop-khalat' will be a significant step in the development of local viticulture and the preservation of agricultural biodiversity.
