The residents of Dagestani high mountain village of Kvankhidatli have started producing handmade salt. It can be bought in marketplaces all over the Russian Federation. The product is extracted from a salty spring in the mountains near the settlement. Its main difference from ordinary salt is in its granular consistency. It also has a different taste.
The process of making mountain salt is quite labor-intensive, that is why its price is a little higher than normal. First, the salt must be mined and then washed to remove impurities. After that, it needs to be dried before it is packed into jars and sold to tourists. In the past, it was possible to purchase these products directly at fairs in the mountains. However, now they are available for purchase anywhere in the country.
It should be noted that salt production in Botlikhsky municipal district of Dagestan began before the revolution of 1917. At that time, a company was established there that supplied the entire region with crystalline products. In the 1960s the production lost its importance, but the trade was not forgotten and continued to develop all this time.
