The Republic of Dagestan implements a comprehensive municipal solid waste management infrastructure project with federal support. A central achievement is the commissioning of a new waste sorting facility in Makhachkala, designed to process up to 500,000 tons of waste per year and serve the central agglomeration.
The technologically advanced plant efficiently separates secondary resources—including plastics, metals, glass and paper—using a line of automated, ballistic, air, and optical sorting equipment. Recovered materials are prepared for recycling, while residual waste is directed to a modern, compliant landfill in Kumtorkalinsky District.
Makhachkala Mayor Djambulat Salavov highlighted the strategic importance of the project for ecological security and urban development. The initiative directly contributes to the objectives of the national "Ecology" project, aiming to drastically reduce landfill disposal and establish a sustainable waste management system in the region.
