The Russian authorities implement extensive measures to combat locust infestations, with plans to treat over 411,000 hectares of land by 2025. This season 25 hectares has been treated in Dagestan, 50 hectares in Stavropol Krai. Locusts are recognized as dangerous pests that can devastate crops rapidly, threatening grain, vegetable crops and pastures.

The presence of locusts poses a significant risk to food security in affected regions. Rosselkhozcenter has enhanced monitoring efforts through satellite data and drones. In Dagestan, farmers are trained to identify and report locust egg clutches to help combat the problem.

Ongoing treatments are also scheduled for Chechnya, Kalmykia and Astrakhan Oblast. The success of the locust control campaign will hinge on a collaborative effort between the authorities and local farmers, emphasizing the critical role of community engagement in agricultural pest management.
