The opening ceremony for the Russian Taekwondo Championship, featuring both men's and women's competitions, took place in Kaspiysk, bringing together over 400 participants hailing fr om 49 different regions of Russia, who converged at the A. Aliyev Sports Palace.
In a statement made by Gaidarbek Gaidarbekov, Deputy Minister of Sport and an Olympic champion, it was mentioned that the championship would serve as a platform for emerging talents from Dagestan to showcase their prowess and potentially achieve remarkable successes on the international stage in the future.
Gaidarbekov highlighted Dagestan's reputation as a hub for nurturing top-tier athletes, including those in the realm of taekwondo, citing notable figures like Seifulla Magomedov — a four-time European champion and a multiple world champion — as well as Radik Isayev — an Olympic champion — and Patimat Abakarova and Gashim Magomedov — Olympic medalists.
Anatoly Terekhov, the president of the Russian Taekwondo Union, told that Dagestan had always been among those regions wh ere great importance is attached to the promotion of sport in general and of taekwondo in particular.
