Fish farming operations in Dagestan have exceeded production targets for juvenile sturgeon intended for restocking the Caspian Sea. A recent inspection by a specialized commission confirmed that these facilities produced a surplus of 140,000 sturgeon juveniles.
According to the North Caucasian Territorial Administration of Rosrybolovstvo, the Mehtebsky and Dagestan sturgeon breeding plants achieved this successful outcome. The sturgeon juveniles weigh approximately 5-6 grams, a size deemed optimal for survival in their natural habitat. The surplus fish will be released into the Caspian Sea imminently.
This release complements previous restocking efforts: 100,000 fry have already been introduced to the sea, with an additional 100,000 planned as part of compensation measures. Consequently, the total number of juvenile sturgeon released into the Caspian Sea in 2025 is projected to exceed 350,000.
