MAKHACHKALA, August 22 – RIA Dagestan. Makhachkala has presented the sixth phase of its Intelligent Transport System rollout, headlined by the opening of a Unified Dispatch Centre for centralized traffic management.
"The city now has a working ITS. After three or four years of downtime, it has been restored — a key step for any modern city. Operators can now control traffic lights, especially during rush hour" First Deputy Mayor Gadzhimurad Murtuzaliev said.
The deployed infrastructure includes 90 CCTV cameras, 274 traffic detectors, 81 controllers and 81 adaptive "smart" traffic lights. The system enables real-time monitoring, faster response to congestion and accidents, smarter signal management, and improved road safety.
Specialist Agakhan Muratkhanov demonstrated how the system works using Akushinsky Avenue: one intersection runs on a fixed program, another is part of a "green wave" while the third one uses local-adaptive control. "If one side has 1,000 cars and the other 100, the controller holds the lighter side and gives more time to the heavier one" - the officer explained.
