International Literary Festival "Istoki" Launches in Dagestan

MAKHACHKALA, May 18 – RIA "Dagestan". The inaugural "Istoki" (Sources) International Literary Festival opened this week in Dagestan, bringing together authors, translators and literary critics from across Russia and neighboring countries.

Held in conjunction with Dagestani Poetry Day, the four-day festival takes place across multiple venues in Makhachkala, Kaspiysk, Derbent, as well as Suleiman-Stalsky and Khasavyurt districts. The program features panel discussions, poetry readings, creative workshops and literary gatherings focused on the legacy of Dagestani literature and interethnic cultural exchange.

The event builds on a longstanding local tradition of honoring Suleiman Stalsky, the People's Poet of Dagestan and a foundational figure in the republic's literary history. The opening ceremony included a floral tribute at Stalsky's monument followed by a gathering at the Avar Theater.

"The first poets of Dagestan taught us respect for elders, protection of the weak, and appreciation for bread and water. But their most profound lesson was the wisdom: 'In our unity lies our strength" Zarema Butaeva, Dagestan's Acting Minister of Culture said during her opening remark.

Marina Akhmedova, Chairperson of Dagestan Union of Writers emphasized the festival's broader cultural mission. "Dagestani classics translated the works of Shota Rustaveli, Yanka Kupala and many outstanding poets of different peoples into their native languages" she noted. "Despite any obstacles, we are together. We stand for human relationships, friendship and good poetry, which must triumph in the world".

Organizers say the festival aims to strengthen literary ties between Dagestan and other regions while introducing international audiences to the region's rich poetic tradition.
