MAKHACHKALA, October 2 – RIA "Dagestan". The XIII North Caucasian Book Festival "Tarki-Tau" has officially commenced on Pushkin Street in Makhachkala, expanding its geographical scope this year to include Buynaksk Museum of Local History.
The large-scale literary event features exhibitions from 47 leading national publishing houses. During the opening ceremony, Yuri Gamzatov, Acting Minister for Digital Development, Information and Press highlighted a positive trend of increasing readership among youth, noting that reading served as a vital antidote to digital noise and a foundation for critical thinking.
A promotional raffle awarded a local resident a comprehensive personal library, with each participating publisher donating a title.
Marat Gadzhiev, the festival's founder and driving force, emphasized that the event had become a staple in the calendars of prominent Russian authors, including Islam Khanipaev, Yuri Polyakov, Marina Moskvina and Maxim Amelin.
With a strong focus on regional identity and the preservation of native languages, the program showcases a graphic novel adaptation of Dostoevsky’s "Crime and Punishment" translated into local languages, alongside biographical works on Alik Abdulgamidov and Gamzat Gamzatov.
Running through October 4, the festival will culminate in the "Best Book" awards supported by the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives, the ANO Institute for the Development of New Media, the Dagmedia holding, Epokha publishing house, the regional branch of the Russian Book Foundation and Dagestan Ministry for Digital Development, Information and Press.
