Dagestan Maintains Leading Position in Country in Sheep Breeding Development

MAKHACHKALA, June 25 – RIA "Dagestan". Acting Deputy Prime Minister Nariman Abdulmutalibov chaired a strategic meeting regarding the organization of breeding efforts and the growth prospects of pedigree livestock farming in Dagestan. Attendees assessed the existing landscape of pedigree farming, discussed enhancements to selection and breeding workflows, and reviewed the integration of modern tech alongside preparations for new federal digitalization rules. The preservation of indigenous animal breeds was a central topic, with participants highlighting their significance to the republic's economic and historical heritage.

According to meeting attendees, Dagestan's livestock population includes over 4.5 million sheep and goats and approximately 1 million cattle. The region's breeding infrastructure consists of 59 specialized entities, such as breeding farms, reproducers, and gene pool farms.

Speakers pointed out that the republic remained a frontrunner in Russia's sheep breeding industry and had considerable potential to scale up the production of premium pedigree stock. A key topic of discussion was the safeguarding of Dagestan Mountain, Andi, Lezghin and Tushin sheep breeds, which hold special significance for the region.
