MAKHACHKALA, August 18 – RIA Dagestan. The acting deputy prime minister Muslim Telyakavov presided over a republican commission meeting that unanimously endorsed commemorative initiatives for six historically significant figures.
The recently renovated Azerbaijan State Musical Drama Theater in Derbent, which President Vladimir Putin officially opened in March following its December 2025 reconstruction, will be named after the legendary Soviet pop and opera singer Muslim Magomayev.
Educational pioneers will also be honored, with a memorial plaque installed on Derbent residence of Enver Garunov and Buynaksk Medical College named after Nikolai Pirogov, the founder of Russian military field surgery who pioneered wartime anesthesia and plaster casts.
Furthermore, a memorial plaque will mark the former Makhachkala home of Gadzhi Magomedov on Agasiev Street, recognizing his distinguished teaching career and his Medal for the Development of Virgin Lands.
A street in Makhachkala will be named after FSB Colonel Gasankhan Ibragimov, honouring a remarkable figure from the golden pages of Soviet and Russian counterintelligence history. Likewise, Suleyman-Stalsky Central Hospital will take the name of Rza Shikhsaidov, the first health commissar of Dagestan ASSR, whose name is inscribed in memory for the extraordinary act of testing herbal malaria remedies upon himself during acute shortages of quinine.
