MAKHACHKALA, June 26 – RIA "Dagestan". Makhachkala City Clinical Hospital has launched a pioneering 45-bed rheumatology department, the first of its kind in the region, the Acting Public Health Minister Aliomar Akhmedov says.
Designed specifically for individuals with autoimmune and systemic pathologies, the unit offers a uniquely controlled environment. Since treatments for these diseases rely heavily on immunosuppressive therapy, patients' immune defenses are severely compromised. The separate facility isolates them from other sick individuals, minimizing the risk of infections, elevating treatment safety and establishing modern standards for rheumatological care.
According to Akhmedov, the new department is equipped to provide patients with cutting-edge, high-cost genetically engineered and targeted treatments. "Such treatment methods make it possible to achieve stable remission, preserve patients' quality of life and prevent severe disability" he noted, adding that the Ministry's main goal is to make this high-tech care as accessible as possible for all Dagestan residents.
The top official commended Khadzhimurad Malaev, the hospital's director, for spearheading this essential initiative, pointing out that it is currently the sole specialized unit of its kind in the entire region.
