MAKHACHKALA, September 25 – RIA Dagestan. Dagestan State Medical University has launched a unique fundamental nanomedicine laboratory equipped with an atomic layer deposition reactor to apply ultra-thin functional films onto medical devices. By coating implants such as hernia meshes and catheters with a specialized titanium dioxide mixture doped with transition metals, researchers can activate protective mechanisms that destroy bacterial membranes and prevent lethal biofilm formation.
The patented technology operates safely at low temperatures without damaging delicate polymers, and its efficacy against antibiotic-resistant strains has been validated through animal testing and published in the international journal Biomedical Materials.
With strong administrative backing and active collaboration across university departments, the lab's leadership plans to advance these antibacterial coatings through preclinical trials and integrate young scientists into the development of future life-saving medical technologies.
