MAKHACHKALA, April 8 – RIA Dagestan. Physics and Technology Faculty ща Dagestan State University hosted a meeting on advancing physics and mathematics education in the republic. Attendees included National Assembly First Vice-Speaker Yury Levitsky, DSU Rector Murtazali Rabadanov, Russian Academy of Sciences Academician Akay Murtazaev, Education Minister Yakhya Buchaev, along with deans and school teachers.
Rector Rabadanov highlighted declining student interest in physics and low USE scores in the subject. Academician Murtazaev called for stronger collaboration between schools, universities, and research institutions. Education Minister Buchaev pointed to a shortage of physics and math teachers, citing low pay as a key factor. He also noted that around 12,000 teachers took part in a monitoring study that uncovered serious gaps in primary education.
Department Head Nazir Ashurbekov raised concerns about high-achieving graduates leaving for other regions and a pronounced shift in student preferences toward humanities disciplines. On a positive note, participants mentioned the renaming of the Mathematics Faculty, which boosted applicant numbers from 650 to 1,000.
