Over 200 Dagestani Schoolchildren to Learn Satellite Image Processing

MAKHACHKALA, June 30 – RIA "Dagestan". A series of "Geography Lessons from Space" has been launched at the planetarium of Dagestan State University as part of the "Caspiy — Orbita" scientific and educational project.

The project is designed to run for two years and will involve at least 200 schoolchildren from Dagestan. The students will analyze automatic identification system data and satellite images from the first Dagestani educational satellite, "Manarov–1".

The satellite, named in honor of the first cosmonaut of Dagestan, Musa Manarov, will be equipped with cameras, an AIS receiver and an amateur radio communication module developed jointly with the Geoscan company.

According to the lecturers, the work with real satellite data considerably deepens students' understanding of geography. The project's purpose is to draw schoolchildren into authentic research instead of limiting them to ordinary lessons.
