MAKHACHKALA, August 13 – RIA "Dagestan". Doctors of the Republican Center for Infectious Diseases saved a critically ill patient diagnosed with leptospirosis, a rare bacterial infection unseen in Dagestan for over a decade.
The disease progressed rapidly to multiple organ failure, causing near-total shutdown of kidney and liver function that threatened the patient's life. When standard intensive care proved ineffective, a medical council authorized the first-ever use of extracorporeal blood filtration in the North Caucasian region.
This high-tech procedure successfully removed infection-induced toxins that the failing organs could no longer eliminate naturally. Following treatment, the patient’s renal and hepatic functions fully recovered, allowing transfer out of intensive care to stable condition.
The Russian Public Health Ministry highlighted this case as evidence of Dagestani medicine’s advanced technical capabilities and coordinated critical care expertise.
