MAKHACHKALA, August 12 – RIA "Dagestan". The International Caspian Sea Day draws attention to the precarious state of the planet's largest enclosed sea and its impact on regional well-being. Heightened scientific interest focuses on invasive species proliferation as a key indicator of ecosystem change and instability.
Researchers from multiple RAS institutes recorded 17 new alien species in Dagestan sector between 2018 and 2025, including significant finds like Corbicula fluminalis and Mytilus galloprovincialis.
These organisms primarily colonize fragile coastal zones where their high adaptive potential threatens to restructure local biotic communities. According to Evgeny Lobachev, this research provides critical baseline data for nature protection measures amidst worsening anthropogenic impacts. The observance reinforces the need for responsible stewardship and coordinated scientific efforts across all Caspian nations.
