In 2024, approximately 5,850 tons of fish were processed in the Republic of Dagestan, which represents a significant increase compared to the previous year's figure of 309.5 tons.

This substantial leap, amounting to more than 18 times, can be attributed to the expansion of production capabilities and the rise in the number of businesses involved in processing operations, Khadijat Shamkhalova, the Chairperson of the regional Fisheries Committee says.

The primary raw materials utilized for processing purposes are traditional Caspian fish species such as sprat, herring, kutum, zalam, zherekh, fathead carp, white amur, pike and bream. Shamkhalova further emphasized that several investment projects implemented in the republic aimed at enhancing fish processing capacities. These projects are primarily located in the northern regions of Dagestan, specifically in Kizlyarski and Tarumovski municipal districts, in the form of small-scale workshops.
