Baku, Azerbaijan, December 5, 2014. Dagestani heavyweight boxer Magomed Omarov won his first bout at the AIBA Pro Boxing tournament –a qualifier for the Olympic Games 2016 held from November 30 to December 2 in Baku, runs the official website of the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA).
In the fight, the trainee of Honoured Coach of Russia Zuber Djafarov won Egypt’s Ahmed Samir on points. It was a 6-round bout. In the last round, Omarov knocked the Egyptian down, but eventually he won on points: 60-54, 60-53, 60-54. Now, he is preparing for the next bout with Ukrainian Sergiy Verleyko.
Other Russian athletes to have won their fights are David Airapetian and Andrei Zamkovoi – the former defeated Argentinean Leandro Blanca and the latter left no chances to Ukrainian Denis Lazarev.
The international AIBA Pro Boxing tournament provides 20 vouchers for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The first names of athletes having earned the Olympic vouchers will be announced January 2015.
