Adyghe Dramatic Classic Staged in Dagestan

Dargin State Drama and Music Theatre in Izberbash hosted a sold-out premiere of the musical comedy “The Grooms”, based on the iconic play by Mamia Yeredyib—a cornerstone of Adyghe classical drama. The production was directed by Aslan Khakuya, People’s Artist of the Republic of Adygea.

Set in the 1950s on a collective farm, the play unfolds against the backdrop of rural Adyghe life, where the rural residents—awaiting the arrival of a new district-appointed manager—navigate love, hope, and interpersonal tensions in their quiet, routine existence. Through humor and lyrical dialogue, Yeredyib explores timeless themes of family values, moral dilemmas, and the complexities of village (aul) life.

A distinctive feature of the work is its rich use of metaphor: in Adyghe tradition, direct expressions of love are avoided, so characters convey their feelings through poetic circumlocution and symbolic language—adding depth and cultural authenticity to the narrative.
