MAKHACHKALA, June 13 – RIA Dagestan. The third "Caucasian Diary of Rubo" scientific and popular readings will be held on June 17 at the A. Taho-Godi National Museum of the Republic of Dagestan. This series of readings is dedicated to popularizing the cultural and historical heritage of the 19th century and its visual representation in art.
Held on a five-year cycle since 2016, with preceding events in 2016 and 2021, the Franz Rubo academic readings have now convened for their third time, attracting a diverse group of specialists from throughout Russia and abroad. The conference agenda encompasses diverse topics centered on Rubo's artistic heritage, including analysis of his "Storming of the Aul of Akhulgo" panorama, examination of his life and creative output, study of Dagestan's portrayal in 19th-century historical and battle paintings, utilization of visual materials for historical investigation, exploration of panorama and diorama artistry in Russian and international traditions, and investigation of how artists, museums and exhibitions construct narratives of history and contemporary life. With scholars participating from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sevastopol, Kazan, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Makhachkala, Minsk, and Düsseldorf, the 2026 readings boast an unprecedented 17 academic presentations, marking the highest participation in the event's history.
The third readings are part of the multicultural project "Akhulgo Archive" is dedicated to two anniversaries: the 135th anniversary of the panorama "Storming of the Aul of Akhulgo" and the 170th anniversary of the birth of Franz Rubo. The project's program includes a presentation of the book "Storming of the Aul of Akhulgo: History and Fate of F. Rubo's Panorama" the "Akhulgo Archive" exhibition and its accompanying catalog, a conference with a collection of articles to be published, master classes in battle painting and lectures for anyone interested in national history and fine arts.
