Experts register an increase in the number of HIV cases in Dagestan. According to the data of the Republican Center for AIDS Prevention and Control, fr om January to November 2023, 380 new cases of infection were registered - this is 84 cases more than for the same period of the last year and 2 times higher than the average annual figures.

The majority of infected people are men (61%), as well as people of working age: from 20 to 29 years - 22%, from 30 to 39 years - 30%. The main cause of infection is unprotected sex - 84% of cases, while previously the main cause was injecting drug use.

Experts emphasize that there is a very low level of public awareness of HIV infection and ways of preventing it in Dagestan. The problem is also in the insufficient number of medical institutions wh ere people can be tested and receive counseling.

Besides, there is stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV in the region.

In this regard, Dagestan is organizing activities to raise public awareness of HIV infection and its consequences, as well as to provide support and assistance to the infected people and their relatives. Thus, seminars, trainings, actions and flash mobs are planned in the region as part of the World AIDS Day, celebrated on December 1.
