Makhachkala, July 3, 2017. The authorities of Shamilsky district of Dagestan intend to improve the road to the Datun church - a medieval Christian church located in the gorge on the river bank. This will attract more tourists to the region, the officials say.
Nowadays, the temple, located near the village of Datun, is visited by about a hundred tourists a year, Abdulgapur Abdulmagomedov, the chief culture specialist of Shamilsky district administration, told. The travelers have to get to the temple off-road, through thorny bushes and a small river.
The local authorities decided to build a 400-meter-long path of wild stone to the temple to make the way more convenient for the tourists. Besides, a fence and a gate will be constructed. The works on the territory improvement are planned to be completed in August. The Datun temple hidden in the gorge is one of the few preserved monuments of Christian culture in Dagestan, the local administration officers note.
