MTS Digital Ecosystem analysed the activity of Russian digital currency miners using Energytool, a patented solution for detecting theft and anomalies in power grids. This year, the regions of the Northern Caucasus, including Dagestan, are no longer among the top regions in terms of the prevalence of mining farms.
In January 2025, 136,575 mining farms were identified in Russia, an increase of 7% compared to the previous year. The total capacity of all individual mining farms in Russia may exceed 11GW.
The largest number of farms were identified in Irkutsk Region, Moscow Region, the Republic of Bashkortostan and Samara Region. A year earlier, the regions of the Northern Caucasus were among the top 5. According to MTS data, the number of mining operations in Dagestan fell by 10% at the beginning of this year.
After comparing the dynamics of identifying theft capacity with the dynamics of the crypto market, MTS Energytool analysts concluded that the peak load of farms occurred in May, February and October 2024. Bitcoin is the most actively mined in Russia, accounting for 90% of capacity, as well as Litecoin, Kaspa, Ethereum and Monero.
