Dagestan authorities have launched a large-scale project to build three inter-communal shelters for homeless pets. These shelters will house more than 10,000 dogs annually, aiming to address the issue of homeless animals in the region. The project's roadmap includes allocation of land for shelter construction and the implementation of measures to open them. Two shelters, each with 180 kennels, will be built in Makhachkala and Kizlyar, while another shelter is almost ready to open in Derbent.
These shelters will operate under the "Catch - Sterilize - Vaccinate - Release" program, which aims to fully cover all neglected animals in the country. However, the capacity of existing shelters is currently insufficient, so it has been decided to establish new facilities.
The new shelters will have modular structure designed to quickly and effectively solve the problem of stray dogs. They will be strategically located in key areas of the region to cover the maximum number of local residents.
This initiative not only aims to improve conditions for homeless animals, but also to reduce the number of human bites caused by stray dogs. To date, 3,404 incidents of bites have been recorded this year, of which 1,027 involved stray dogs.
