The concerted efforts of environmental agencies and authorities in Dagestan have resulted in the restoration of the Gudiyski canal of the Terek River, replenishing the Arakum and Lower Tere reservoirs. This has created favorable conditions for the revival of valuable fish species. The area of work covered approximately 40,000 hectares.
In the 1990s, mismanagement of the Terek River led to changes in its course, causing a decrease in water flow into the lakes. This resulted in a 70% reduction in lake surface area and a decline in fish populations. The Volga Interregional Environmental Prosecution Office, the Head of the Republic of Dagestan, the Federal Fishery Agency and the regional authorities collaborated to develop and implement a series of measures aimed at restoring the flow of the Gudiyski canal.
In 2024, a financial grant of RUB 120 million helped to enhance the depth of the Terek River and the Gudiyski Canal. This initiative aims to guarantee the unobstructed flow of water into all lakes. It is expected that by the start of the spawning season in 2025, all water bodies will be fully flooded to their designated levels.
