MAKHACHKALA, August 17 – RIA Dagestan. "Dagestan Aul" Museum in Makhachkala has opened an exhibition commemorating the 260th anniversary of historian Nikolai Karamzin, provided by Moscow’s Ostafyevo State Museum and running until October 18, 2026.
The opening ceremony featured government and cultural representatives. Organizers emphasize Karamzin’s creative legacy within the Year of the Unity of the Peoples of Russia, noting how his twelve-volume "History of the Russian State" shaped national historiography.
The display explores his life at the Ostafyevo estate and highlights Volume Three’s account of Mongol-Tatar attempts to capture Derbent in 1222. Karamzin notably referenced Dagestani chronicle "Derbent-Nameh" in his footnotes, introducing this regional text into broader scholarly discourse for the first time.
By integrating Caucasian history into the national narrative, he underscored the region’s peoples’ roles in international relations and their enduring ties with Russia.
