The harvest of diospyros, commonly known as persimmon, is in full swing in the Republic. This bright orange fruit is a valuable commodity and Dagestan is one of the three regions in Russia where it is cultivated.

The cultivation of persimmon takes place primarily in the southern districts of Dagestan, including Magaramkent, Suleiman-Stalsky, Kayakent and Derbent municipal disreicts. These areas boast beautiful orchards that produce these delectable fruits.

Harvesting begins in mid-October and the ripe fruits are carefully picked and transported to various regions within the country and even beyond its borders. For example, Dagestani persimmon can be found in Iran. This season, it is estimated that approximately 6,000 tons of this sweet and astringent fruit will be harvested, representing a 20% increase compared to last year's production.

There is no need for chemical treatments of persimmon seedlings or fruits. This also ensures the ecological purity of the sweet berry. Dagestan gardeners report that the crop thrives in local climatic conditions and the abundance of vitamins and trace elements in the fruits makes it highly sought after by consumers.
