The Kavkaz highway will be widened to four lanes along its entire length by the year 2030. This motorway stretches from the village of Pavlovskaya in Krasnodar Krai region to the border with Azerbaijan, covering a total distance of 1,100 kilometers. Within the territory of Dagestan, sections of this highway stretch for approximately 300 kilometers. By 2025, an additional 10 kilometers of this motorway within Dagestan will undergo expansion from two to four lanes, resulting in a width ranging from 7.5 meters to 14 meters.
This highway forms part of the North-South international transport corridor, connecting various regions of the Russian Federation with foreign countries. It serves as a crucial route for carrying a significant volume of traffic, encompassing both tourist flows and cargo transportation, hence garnering special attention. By 2030, the entire stretch of the R-217 highway will be converted into a four-lane facility with special lanes for traffic separation, Alexander Lukashuk, the head of Kavkaz Federal Highway Department of the Federal Highway Agency says.
