The construction of the first of six solid urban waste management facilities planned in Dagestan has been successfully completed, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of the region's solid waste management system. Located in Kumtorkalinski municipal district, the modern landfill boasts a capacity of 300,000 tons of waste and is slated to become fully operational by 2025. Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, it represents a testament to the commitment to environmental sustainability.
In parallel, five additional solid waste management facilities are currently under construction, comprising three waste sorting complexes and two additional landfills. These projects are scheduled to be commissioned in the coming year, further enhancing the region's capacity for effective waste management. All facilities have been meticulously designed to comply with the stringent regulations in place, ensuring minimal impact on the environment.
This development follows the introduction of a novel treatment system for municipal solid waste in 2019. This shift was accompanied by the decommissioning of two existing landfills and the establishment of a new infrastructure for waste management.
The Head of Dagestan Sergei Melikov conveyed his gratitude to the government of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Russian Ecological Operator for their support in the construction of these facilities. It is anticipated that all residents of Dagestan will embrace this initiative and assume responsibility for maintaining the cleanliness of their towns and districts, thus contributing to a future in which their children can breathe unpolluted air, drink uncontaminated water and enjoy the beauty of nature – Melikov is quoted as saying.
