Zaur Askenderov, Speaker of the People's Assembly of the Republic of Dagestan, and Saghiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan, met in Baku to discuss the possible opening of the Russian-Azerbaijani border. During the meeting, which took place in the Azerbaijani capital, the two delegations exchanged views on a number of bilateral issues.

Askenderov noted that the Presidents of Russia and Azerbaijan, Vladimir Putin and Ilham Aliyev, attach great importance to the development of bilateral relations. Dagestan, as a part of the Russian Federation, values good neighbourly relations with the multinational people of Azerbaijan, based on deep historical and cultural commonalities.

Zaur Asgenderov stressed the importance of further developing economic cooperation and proposed the creation of joint working groups to increase the efficiency of cooperation between the parliaments.

The main topic of discussion was the reopening of the land border between Russia and Azerbaijan. The speaker argued that this step would contribute to the strengthening of cultural, historical and economic ties between the two territories. Dagestani delegation put forward the idea of starting a bus service for residents of the border regions whose relatives live in the neighbouring country.
