The mysterious and ancient "ghost aul" of Kahib was once considered the most impregnable place in Dagestan. Historians say that people lived here as far back as the Paleolithic era. Today, ancient Kahib is one of the major touristic attractions in Dagestan. Tourists enjoy visiting this village to see its old battle towers and dilapidated houses, feel the unique atmosphere and learn about the history of highlanders’ life.
In the 1950s, residents of this village started to move to the slope and build the village of New Kahib. By the early 1980s, the old village had become completely deserted. In the late 1990s, people started leaving New Kahib, as they moved to cities such as Makhachkala, Moscow and St Petersburg, as well as to the north. However, now the process has reversed and highlanders are starting to return to their village.
Now, there is an opportunity not only to earn money in the mountains but also to help their fellow villagers with work. It's worth noting that the locals of Kahib are investing in their homeland and moving there to live. For example, the Magomedov’s family has built a suspension bridge and a cable car, making the ruins more accessible and increasing the flow of tourists.
Now, the mountaineers are rebuilding their houses not only for tourism purposes. Some of them are using them as summer homes. With the growing domestic tourism, people now have an opportunity to live on their historical homelands - the lands of their ancestors. Here, they not only earn money but also strive to preserve the heritage of their forefathers in every possible way .
