Energy consumption grows by 9% in Dagestan

The energy consumption in the region increased by 9 percent in 2024. The illegal mining of cryptocurrencies contributed to the growing burden on the electric power sector.

During the course of 2024, a total of 1,874 inspections were conducted, resulting in the detection of 2,844 cases of unreported electricity usage, including 38 cases of electricity theft associated with mining operations.

As of January 1st, 2025, a ban on cryptocurrency mining has been imposed in Dagestan until April 1st, 2031. The damages caused by illegal mining activities in 2024 reached RUB 353 million, equivalent to approximately 86 million kilowatt-hours of electricity.
