Waterloo, Belgium, November 7, 2014. Daghestan’s Zabia Medjidova, Elena Shornikova and Ashura Akhmedova as part of the Russia women's national rugby-15 team won bronze medals of the prestigious European Trophy tournament which finished yesterday in the Belgian town of Waterloo, athletes’ coach Magomed Gadjimagomedov told RIA "Daghestan".
The best 4 qualified European national rugby-15 teams (Russia, Holland, Belgium, and Switzerland) participated in the final stage of the tournament. The event started with semi-finals later followed by the final. In the semifinal, team Belgium won the Russian team 29:7, and in the game for third place the Russians defeated the Switzerland’s team 31:24.
Gadjimagomedov says that in Daghestan, rugby has become quite popular for the past few years. Daghestani athletes earn membership in the men's and women's national teams of Russia. Hamidova sisters used to be familiar to everyone, but now we hear new names, like girls performing in Waterloo, and Naida Alikhanova who has debuted for the Russian national team at the European rugby-7 championship. The same holds true with Daghestani guys playing for top Russian rugby clubs.
