The Russian Environmental Operator has announced the top 20 regions in terms of municipal solid waste (MSW) management based on the results of the first 11 months of 2024. The rating is compiled taking into account both statistical indicators and the public opinion survey.

Moscow and Moscow region occupy the top three positions, followed by Nizhny Novgorod and Tula regions. Dagestan, which has demonstrated remarkable progress, ranks 20th in the list. In just one year, the republic has climbed 29 positions.

The regional authorities make efforts to construct comprehensive waste treatment facilities. This year, they aim to put into operation a state-of-the-art landfill, while next year, three additional sorting facilities and two new landfills are scheduled to be commissioned.

The regions were assessed based on a number of criteria, including the timeliness of construction, the adequacy of infrastructure for managing solid waste, the extent to which the population is covered by separate waste collection systems, the dynamics of indicators related to the treatment and disposal of solid waste and the presence of deficits in waste disposal capacities, the REO reports.
